EE has announced that it will be doubling the speed of its 4G network to a high of 80Mb per second and an average of 20Mbps. Current speeds on its 4G network range between 8 and 12Mbps.

Ten UK cities with existing EE coverage will reap the benefits of the faster speeds by this summer and these are London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The new technology has already been trialed in Cardiff and EE have confirmed that headline speeds have topped in excess of 80Mbps.

The great news is that if you already have an EE 4G contract with us and live in one of the cities which will automatically receive the improved service, the faster speeds will be included in all existing and new contracts. The 4G service capacity is also being increased with the bandwidth also doubling from 10MHz to 20MHz which will reduce congestion during peak user times and also help to further boost speeds.

At the moment EE is still the only mobile operator to offer 4G services in the UK. EE hope to have over 1 million 4G subscribers by the end of the year. By June 2013, EE plan to roll out its 4G service to 80 towns and cities with a longer term aim to cover 98% of the UK by the end of 2014.
