Sony unveiled their Xperia Z3 smartphone last month, which follows hot on the heels of the Z2. If you're considering an upgrade, we thought we'd take a look at how these two premium handsets compare.

Design and Display

Sony have kept the design of the Z3 very similar to that of the Z2. The Z2 impressed with its good looking and high quality feel and Sony have been keen to build on and improve the look of the Xperia Z3.

They both feature a 5.2-inch 1080 x 1920 pixel screen, the Z3 has a slightly smaller and lighter build and is 0.9mm slimmer in depth. In addition, the Z2 and Z3 are water resistant and dust proof, the Z3 has an IP68 certificate which means it's pretty robust. In terms of the screen on the Z3, it shares any similarities with its Z2 predecessor and has the advantage of better brightness levels - 600 nits compared to 460 nits - so it's easier to read the Z3's screen in bright sunlight.

The camera on Sony's Xperia Z2 wowed users and the mobile phone industry alike so Sony have taken the decision to use exactly the same camera on the Xperia Z3. The 20.7-megapixel camera on the rear is one of the most powerful smartphone cameras out there and according to many critics out performs pretty much all its competitors.  It features an LED flash, autofocus and HDR and takes fantastic and detailed photos in all light conditions.

Power and Processor

The processor in the Xperia Z3 has been upgraded to a newer Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.5GHz CPU from the 2.3GHz processor in the Z2. It may seem like a minor change to a slightly quicker processor but the latest Snapdragon 801 chip is more power and battery efficient.

Sony have left the already generous 3GB of RAM found in the Z2, the same for the Z3. Thanks to the greater power efficiency of the Z3, the battery is in fact slightly smaller at 3100mAh compared to the 3200mAh battery found in the Z2. On the memory front, both the Xperia Z2 and Z3 have 16GB onboard storage which can be expanded up to 128GB, there's also a version of the Z3 with 32GB of memory.
