So many to choose from but this list makes it a bit easier
This year is only half done and it has already seen a host of new and exciting phones on the market, so this is a good time to run through our list of the best phones 2020 has seen so far. We’re not just talking about hardware and specifications here either, we’ve considered value for money and feedback from our team and customers. In reverse order, here are our ten favourites…
10. iPhone 11 Pro Max
The bigger version of the iPhone 11 Pro, this is a seriously powerful piece of phone technology and a significant upgrade on the iPhone XS. Yes, it’s the most expensive iPhone around right now, but even at its current price, it represents value for money, given what it packs in, from its 6.5 inch AMOLED display to its three rear cameras – think of it as the Macbook Pro of the iPhone range. Powered by the latest Apple A13 Bionic chip, the iPhone 11 Pro Max also features an upgraded front-facing camera, a bigger battery and superior water resistance.
9. Samsung Galaxy A51
Samsung have hit the mark with this mid-tier phone that represents the ideal option if you’re looking for a Galaxy at an affordable price. The Galaxy A51 features an impressive AMOLED screen with a 1080 x 2400 resolution and software that feels virtually identical to the Galaxy S20 series. It also features an in-screen fingerprint scanner and a handy 3.5mm headphone port, along with four rear cameras.
8. Google Pixel 4 XL
The Google Pixel 4 XL is another innovative entry to the market from Google, who continue to redefine the smartphone with new ideas. Boasting a smooth 90Hz OLED display, the Pixel 4 XL comes in bold, contrast colours, and features a minimalist design that has plenty of appeal. You don’t get any bloatware, this is a pure Android experience as Google meant it to be. The 90Hz screen looks great and the 3040 x 1440 resolution is sharp. It also boasts the innovative Face Unlock technology in place of the familiar fingerprint unlock and the popular Motion Sense feature that enables you to silence an alarm or call with a wave of your hand.
7. Samsung Galaxy S20
The Samsung Galaxy S20, follows on from last year’s S10 and this represents a hefty upgrade, with plenty packed in. A powerful piece of kit, the S20 has an attractive yet ergonomic design, and comes with a host of new features. Galaxy fans who are keen to try out 5G will love the extra network speed gained from that variant (a 4G version is also available), as well as the 120Hz display, battery upgrade and hi-tech cameras on both sides. This is ideal if you want to get a taste of what the Galaxy range can do, while it is cheaper and easier to handle than the giant S20 Ultra.
6. Samsung Galaxy A71
If you’re looking for Galaxy S-series flagship features but in a more affordable model, the A71 could be the handset for you. This attractive looking phone packs in a huge 6.7-inch display, along with an impressive four cameras and a massive 4,500mAh battery. The big colourful screen and attractive design are plus points, and there’s even an option to use Face Recognition technology. The A71 offers a top of the range feel for a price that won’t break the bank. There’s a good reason why, outside of the S-series, it’s the most popular Samsung phone available at Chitter Chatter.
5. Huawei P30 Pro
It is tough to stand out in the smartphone world, but Huawei have managed it with this impressive flagship, that still remains hugely popular, despite it launching over a year ago. The P30 Pro is perfect if you’re focused on photos, thanks to its three cameras and incorporation of technology such as the Time of Flight sensor and an impressive zoom of up to x50. Capable of incredible camera performance at very low light, the P30 Pro has an impressive battery, superfast charging speed and represents a beautifully designed slice of smartphone future.
4. iPhone SE (2020)
The iPhone SE employs the same A13 Bionic chip that can be found powering the iPhone 11. That’s pretty impressive, given that this is the more affordable iPhone option. This handset is the ideal choice if you’re on the hunt for a new iPhone that will remain useful for a few years but don’t want to spend a fortune on the top-end flagship model. The SE provides solid performance specs, an excellent camera, and is a much lighter model than many recent iPhones. When it comes to value for money, this is a big hit and a popular upgrade from the iPhone 6s or 7.
3. Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus
The powerful and sleek Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus is as close to Android smartphone perfection as you can get in 2020. The S20 Plus boasts excellent 5G connectivity and a very impressive battery, along with a bigger display than the S20. It’s a sleek, lean smartphone with a 6.7 inch AMOLED display with a 3040 x 1440 display. If you’re looking for a phone that can handle anything you need it to do, and with the staying power to last you a few years, the S20 Plus could be the answer. Yes, the S20 Ultra is a more powerful piece of kit, but as far as value for money goes, the Plus is the winner here – we actually prefer it to the Ultra and so do most of our customers.
2. Samsung Galaxy S10
The Galaxy S10 may be a year old, but it remains a powerful and attractive option from Samsung and its specs and camera performance stands up well in 2020, helped too by a nice price drop that kicked in following the S20 launch. When it was released last year, it felt like a fresh option and the large Infinity-O screen remains a striking feature. The triple-lens rear camera is able to produce ultra-wide photos, while the in-screen fingerprint technology is smooth and the Wireless PowerShare feature is a great innovation.
1. iPhone 11
There has been a clear winner for the best phone available in 2020 so far and it’s the iPhone 11; the stellar all-rounder that continues to be our top seller following it’s September 2019 launch. The official successor to the XR, the iPhone 11 offers almost exactly the same camera technology as the much more expensive iPhone 11 Pro, with a 6.1 inch display and a premium-feel. The rear sensor technology enables wide angled photos and the night mode is a big hit. Available in a range of new colours, this is a powerful and robust device to suit all users. It’s the phone this writer chose to upgrade to from their battered iPhone 8 Plus, and it’s exceeded all expectations so far. A little known fact too, the iPhone 11 actually has a larger display (6.1 inch) than the 11 Pro (5.8 inch).
