sony-xperia-z-ultraSony continues to expand its stylish Xperia range with the unveiling of the huge Xperia Z Ultra. Firmly in the ‘Phablet’ end of the market, the Xperia Z Ultra is being billed as the slimmest of the large screened handsets available. Samsung’s popular phablets currently have about 70% of the large phone/phablet market and Sony is keen to join them.  Here’s the lowdown on the Xperia Z Ultra.

Recently, unveiled at the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra will go on sale in some Asian countries in July and will be available to buy in Europe from September. Similar to the Galaxy Note devices, the Xperia Z Ultra has also been designed so you can easily write or draw on the screen using a metal pen, stylus or even a normal pencil. The Sony screen size is a fairly big step up at 6.4 inches compared to the Galaxy Note 2’s 5.5-inch screen. In terms of slimness, the Xperia Z Ultra is an impressive 6.5mm in depth which makes it almost 3mm thinner than the Note 2.

As with most Sony devices, the Xperia Z Ultra is a phablet of beauty and boasts the same ‘OmbiBalance’ design as their Xperia Z phone and the Xperia Tablet Z. It also combines looks with practicality as its hardy (dust-proof, shatterproof, scratch-resistant glass) and water resistant to a depth of more than 1.5 metres.

Display-wise, it has 1080p resolution and a pixel density of 344ppi with a Triluminos display (also used on Sony Bravia TV sets) complete with OptiContrast and X-Reality which can optimise the quality of lower res video and picture quality. As well as being big on size and style, the Xperia Z Ultra is superbly powerful as it features the new ultra-fast Snapdragon 800 Quad-core 2.2GHz processor and operates on the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which probably makes it the fastest mobile device around at the moment. It comes with 16GB of internal storage and microSD slot should you wish to increase its storage capacity. Sony also advises that that the 3050mAh battery will provide up to 120 hours of audio playback or 11 hours of talk time.

In terms of camera, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra features an 8-megapixel Sony Exmor RS HDR camera with LED flash, image stabilisation, face detection and panoramic capture as well as full HD 1080p video recording. The front-facing camera is 2-megapixel and also has 1080p video capture.

Expected to be available in a choice of 3 colours, black, white and a lovely shade of purple, we will certainly keep you updated as soon as we know when the Xperia Z Ultra will be available to buy from Chitter Chatter.
