microsoft_lumiaThis week, we start with sad news.  It's recently been announced that Microsoft will be dropping the Nokia brand name from their Lumia range of smartphones. Instead of Nokia Lumia, the new smartphones will be known as Microsoft Lumia. The name change only applies to the mobile phone division of Nokia which was bought by Microsoft this year, the Nokia name will continue to exist for other goods made by Nokia which aren't mobile phone related. Microsoft have recently been phasing out the Nokia name from their latest smartphones and the complete rebranding will roll out across the world in the coming months.

Whilst we're talking about Microsoft, we thought we'd mention that there's been quite a bit of speculation that the software giant are keen to join in the 'wearable' party with some technology of their own. Reports have been circulating that suggest that they are working on a Microsoft Smartwatch which will be built by a company called Redmond which will incorporate fitness and health monitoring. With Apple due to launch their own Apple Watch in the new year, Microsoft won't want to be left behind. It's thought that the Microsoft Smartwatch will be broadly similar to other smartwatches on the market but it will boast a superior battery life which could give it around 2 days of use between charges. Watch this space for more news as we get it.

On the subject of wearables, an innovative new gadget called the Klatz smart bracelet could provide an alternative to making and receiving calls via your smartwatch. Instead of having to talk into a watch, the Klatz is a bracelet which you can flip open in order to take or make calls and, of course, it doubles up as a nice bit of jewellery. The display is likely to be fairly basic in comparison to a smartwatch, however on the upside it packs in a 600mAh battery which apparently can last for as long as 10 days. It's also going to be very competitively priced at around $139 so if you don't need all the added extras on a smartwatch, it could be a good alternative wearable.
